Emotional Support for Burned Out Staff

What is Burned Out Staff?

According to Lab Manager, Burnout strikes employees when they have exhausted their physical or emotional strength. This usually occurs as a result of prolonged stress or frustration. Sometimes the cause is the work environment. Stressful jobs, lack of support and resources, and tight deadlines can all contribute to burnout.

How Burnout Affects Employees and the Workplace

Burnout affects an employee’s emotional and physical well-being. It is important for employers to be aware of the signs of burnout in their employees and take preventative measures.

Burnout occurs when an individual is consistently overworked, underappreciated, or both. It can negatively affect personal relationships, physical health, and job performance.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), one in five full-time workers suffers from workplace burnout. This number increases with age – more than 40% of people between 44 and 54 experience burnout at work. One study found that 30% of people who experience workplace burnout will leave their job within six months – with most looking for new employment within three months. So it’s no surprise that employers are looking for ways to protect their investment.

What are the Causes of Burn-Out?

Burn-out is a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. It has been shown to be caused by chronic stress at work. The most common work-related stressors are low social support, high job demands, unmanageable workloads, lack of control over the work process, and lack of control over the organization’s goals.

Some burn-out symptoms are feeling tired all the time even when you sleep well, being more irritable than usual with loved ones or coworkers at home or on the job, having less enthusiasm for hobbies or activities that used to bring you joy.

There are some ways to reduce your risk for burn-out. These include being self-aware about your own coping skills so you can address them early on if needed before they lead to mental or physical health issues.
